Sensory Play with Everyday Household Items

Simple, Affordable, and Powerful Learning Experiences for Children

Sensory play is one of the most effective ways to support a child’s cognitive, emotional, and physical development—and it doesn’t require expensive toys or fancy kits. With everyday household items, you can create rich sensory experiences that stimulate the senses, encourage creativity, and promote early learning at home.

This guide explores what sensory play is, why it matters, and how to create engaging sensory activities using common household items, making it perfect for parents, caregivers, and educators.

What Is Sensory Play?

Sensory play refers to activities that engage one or more of the five senses:

  • Touch

  • Sight

  • Sound

  • Smell

  • Taste (used carefully and age-appropriately)

These activities help children explore their environment while building critical skills through hands-on experiences.

Why Sensory Play Is Important for Child Development

1. Enhances Brain Development

Sensory activities strengthen neural connections in the brain, especially during early childhood when the brain is rapidly developing.

2. Builds Fine and Gross Motor Skills

Scooping, pouring, squeezing, and sorting help improve hand-eye coordination and muscle control.

3. Encourages Language and Communication

As children describe textures, sounds, and sensations, they naturally expand vocabulary and expressive language.

4. Supports Emotional Regulation

Sensory play can calm anxious children, reduce stress, and help regulate emotions.

5. Promotes Creativity and Problem-Solving

Open-ended sensory experiences allow children to experiment, imagine, and think critically.

Benefits of Using Everyday Household Items for Sensory Play

  • Cost-effective – No need to buy special toys

  • Easily accessible – Items already in your home

  • Eco-friendly – Reuse and recycle materials

  • Safe and familiar – Children recognize the objects

  • Highly customizable – Adapt for any age group

After moving suburbs, it was so hard to find the right day care after leaving one we loved — and after attending another in the area we were not happy with, we finally found "the one!" From his first day, our son felt comfortable and settled in straight away, which gave us so much peace of mind. The educators are so caring and genuine, and the centre’s extra-curricular activities and one-of-a-kind preschool program are incredible. The centre is also very spacious and has beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces. I highly recommend Learning Blocks Dural! Thank you Susie, Silvana and the whole team for creating such a beautiful and space space for children to thrive!

Our little one has been part of Learning Blocks for the past 2.5 years, starting at one year old. After visiting several centres, this one immediately stood out—it felt different in the best way.Under Susie’s leadership the centre has become a place where children and their parents are seen and supported. The educators are caring and passionate. They’ve helped our little one grow into a confident, curious, joyful little person, who made friends he can’t stop talking about.
What made it even more special were the thoughtful experiences woven into everyday life: visits from farm animals, emergency services, butterflies, science workshops, and sports. Each week brought something new, and our little one didn’t want to leave.
As parents, there’s no greater comfort than knowing your child is safe, happy, and thriving. That peace of mind is something we’ll always be grateful for. Leaving Learning Blocks due to relocation has been incredibly hard. We will miss it dearly and carry so many beautiful memories with us. To Susie and the entire team—thank you.

We love Learning Blocks!

After a bad experience at another childcare we so grateful to have found learning blocks. Susie, Silvana and the whole Leanring Blocks team not only welcomed my son but our whole family into the learning blocks community. Learning Blocks isn't just a childcare but a community of families brought together through child care. I love coming in for thoughtfully planned activities to connect the community together!
Since moving my son to Learning Blocks I have observed and identified big improvements in his separation anxiety, speech and cognitive abilities. He absolutely loves the daily incursions (especially the sport!) And Tuesdays catering by the Billy the Greek team. We love learning blocks!
